Welcome to November......The end of the year is fast approaching, what charitable deed have you done this year??

Hurray, it's November. Welcome to the new month. Can you believe it is just about 7 weeks to Christmas? Yes, the end of the year is fast approaching. I believe November would prove to be a very special month for everyone. Let's not forget that it is also the month of thanksgiving.

I am absolutely sure that a lot of you made resolutions at the beginning of the year. What percentage of those resolutions have you accomplished? I advice you go back to your list and reflect on it.

Ask yourself what you have done this year?
What do you have left to do?
What have you failed to do? and why did you fail?

Importantly, did your resolution list contain only things you wanted to accomplish for yourself? What about things you would do for others? Did you include Charity in your list? If you realised that your list was a little bit self oriented, don't beat yourself up. It is not too late to make a difference in someone's life.

The truth is, you do not have to dis-please yourself to please others. Helping people should come naturally to you without discomfort. It is simple. Do what you can do and don't try to do what others are doing. 2013 is not yet over, you still have approximately 60 days left. It takes just a second to make a difference.

Charity is the practice of benevolent giving and caring. It also a way of showing unlimited love and kindness. Which of the following have you engaged in this year?

  • Donate food stuff (no matter how little) to Orphanages and care homes.
  • Give monetary gifts to the less fortunate or deposit cash into the bank accounts of the motherless babies' homes, orphanages, etc.
  • Stop wasting food. Instead of throwing it in the bin, give it to someone that would appreciate a decent meal.
  • Give out clothes and accessories that you haven't worn this year. You probably do not need it, if you have not worn or used it in a year. It is a fact!! While it is having mildew in your wardrobe, there is someone out there that would happily wear it Everyday!!
  • Be a mentor.
  • Ask someone (your colleague, friend, neighbour, etc), "Is there anything I can do to help or support you today?" - Emphasis should be on I can do. Therefore, if the response is for a favour that you genuinely cannot do, tell the person immediately. The bottom line is to show that you care.
  • Listen to someone's problems without being judgemental about it. Allow the person to pour it all out on you. Believe me, it makes a big difference.
  • Buy lunch for a stranger.
  • Smile. Everyone needs a smile and besides it takes less facial muscles to give a smile than it takes to frown.
  • Be friendly and Respect others. I read a story online about a young man who with no real explanation, brought his entire books home from school for the weekend. He mistakenly dropped his books and several of his fellow students laughed. A popular boy at school decided to help him pick them up and he also befriended him. They spent a lot of time together that weekend. Four years later, at graduation, the nerdy kid that had dropped his books was the valedictorian and gave his graduation speech. He told how he had actually planned to kill himself that day four years previously. He revealed that he had brought his books home that weekend so that his mother wouldn't have to clean out his locker after his death. However, because he had been befriended by the popular student, he chose to live. So can you see how a simple act of kindness saved a life??
  • Pray for those around you and people you see especially when you feel they need prayers. God may help someone because you asked Him to.

If you haven't done anything in the above list. Begin now. You can start with your family and friends. There are over a thousand and one things you can do to make a difference. Therefore, you don't need to rely solely on my list.

Remember, today (November 1) is All saints day, wouldn't you want to be remembered as a saint??
