Get Ready!!!.....Partial Solar Eclipse on Sunday (November 3rd)

Based on the predictions of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Nigeria would experience a partial solar eclipse on Sunday, November 3, 2013. Exciting, right??

To be frank with you, I don't know why I am so excited about this (maybe because the last solar eclipse witnessed in Nigeria was in 2006).

The Director General of NASDRA, Dr Saidu Mohammed has explained that the eclipse will come in three phases; a partial eclipse at about 1.00 pm, the maximum eclipse shortly before 3.00pm, and a few minutes after 4.00pm, the moon will leave the sun’s edge marking the end of the eclipse.

Anyway, the timeline for the eclipse as reported in the Nigerian voice is as follows,

Abakaliki- 1.06pm to 4.09pm
Ibadan- 12.52pm to 4.01pm
Port harcourt- 1.03pm to 4.09pm
Enugu- 1.04pm to 4.07pm
Lagos- 12.50pm to 4.01pm
Kano- 1.07pm to 4.01pm
Abuja- 1.03pm to 4.03pm
Uyo- 1.06pm to 4.09pm

Generally, the eclipse would be experienced in several African countries and other regions of the world; Hamilton, Bermuda; New York, U.S.A; Freetown, Sierra Leone; Monrovia, Liberia; São Tomé, Sao Tome and Principe; Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; Port-Gentil, Gabon; ibreville, Gabon; Yaoundé, Cameroon; Brazzaville, Congo; Kinshasa, Congo Dem. Rep; Bangui, Central African Republic; Juba, South Sudan; Kigali, Rwanda; Kampala, Uganda; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Nairobi, Kenya and Mogadishu, Somalia.

Are you a learner? You don't know much about eclipses? or do you need detailed info about eclipses to enable contribute more during discussions (believe me, people would definitely be talking about the eclipse)?

If you have answered yes to any of the above questions, please click here and here. Like I always say, Knowledge is Power!!

A word of caution: Do not look directly at the sun during an eclipse!! It can lead to permanent eye damage or blindness. Special eye protection or indirect viewing techniques are used when viewing a solar eclipse. Standard sunglasses cannot be used as solar filters. So you cannot use sunglasses, to stare at the Sun during the partial phases of an eclipse.

So where would you be during the eclipse?
